The 15th Queer Trans People of Color Conference, hosted by UC Riverside on February 28-29, 2020, will feature Jade Phoenix Martinez during Saturday’s events. Jade Phoenix will screen her film HOW TO MAKE A RAINBOW during the morning welcome, and engage in a Q&A about the film. Tender and bold, HOW TO MAKE A RAINBOW observes a young girl (Alaizah) and her mother (Jade) over two years as they journey through the realities of a parent in transition.The story centers around Alaizah and her process of figuring out what to call her ‘papa,’ who is in the beginning years of a gender transition.Together they navigate homelessness, Jade’s exploration of gender, as well as the daily joys and struggles of growing up. In its timely exploration of our perceived limits of love, gender expression, motherhood and childhood, this film invites us to let Alaizah be our guide as we learn and unlearn alongside her the limits and possibilities of identity and connection.
Jade Phoenix Martinez is a Queer, Trans, Femme, First-Generation Filipinx-American, Keynote Speaker, Performance Poet, Film Producer, Educator, Writer and Parent. Jade’s work is a poetic expression rooted in the multiple identities she holds and how they intersect with her day-to-day fight for collective liberation, while boldly creating art and cultural content in hopes of bringing queer and trans stories into today’s current social, political and cultural landscapes. Jade Phoenix is a fierce story and truth teller, a vulnerable and dynamic performance poet, an informative and engaging film producer and activist and has utilized her platform and art to shift and create much needed conversation and dialogue, specifically for trans women/femme and gender non conforming people of color in the arts, higher education, and film.
